Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

UptimeBuddy ("we", "us", or "our") is a website and service uptime monitoring platform operated from New Hampshire, United States. We monitor HTTPS endpoints, DNS records, and IP hosts on your behalf and alert you when something goes down. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: your email address and password (stored as a one-way hash by our authentication provider) when you create an account.
  • Profile details: display name, alert email address, and — only if you opt in — a phone number for SMS downtime alerts.
  • Monitor configuration: the URLs, domain names, DNS record types, IP addresses, and ports you ask us to check, along with your chosen check intervals and grouping labels.
  • Contact messages: your name, email, subject, and message when you submit the contact form.
  • Billing information: when you upgrade to a paid plan, payment processing is handled by our payment provider (Stripe). We do not store your full card number or banking details — those stay with Stripe. We retain a record of your subscription status and plan for service delivery.

Information collected automatically

  • Check results: for each monitor we store the status (up or down), HTTP status code, response time, and any error text returned by the target host.
  • Usage data: standard server logs including approximate IP address, browser type, timestamps, and pages visited, used for security and reliability.
  • Cookies and local storage: a session token is stored so you stay signed in. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

3. How we use your information

  • To run the uptime checks you configure and record their results.
  • To send you downtime and recovery notifications by email and, if enabled, SMS.
  • To manage your account, subscription, and billing.
  • To respond to support requests and contact-form submissions.
  • To detect abuse, secure the platform, and comply with legal obligations.
  • To improve and maintain the service, including aggregated, non-identifying analytics.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

4. Legal basis for processing (EU/UK users)

If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on the following bases:

  • Performance of a contract: running your monitors and delivering alerts.
  • Legitimate interests: security, fraud prevention, and service reliability.
  • Consent: optional SMS alerts and marketing communications, which you can withdraw at any time.
  • Legal obligation: retaining records where required by law.

5. How we share information

We share data only with service providers who help us operate UptimeBuddy:

  • Authentication & database hosting: our backend provider stores account and monitor data on our behalf under data-processing terms.
  • Email delivery: used to send authentication emails and downtime alerts.
  • SMS delivery: our SMS gateway provider is used only if you enable text alerts and is given your phone number solely to deliver the message.
  • Payment processing: Stripe processes payments. We receive back a subscription identifier and plan status, not your card details.

We may disclose information when required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of UptimeBuddy, our users, or others.

6. Data retention

We retain check-result history for as long as your account is active so you can review past uptime. Contact messages are kept for up to 12 months for support quality. Server logs are retained for up to 90 days. When you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Delete your account and associated personal data.
  • Export your monitor configuration and check history.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Withdraw consent for optional features like SMS alerts.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@uptimebuddy.co. We respond within 30 days.

8. Security

We protect your data with encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to production data is restricted to authorized personnel and scoped service roles. Row-level security policies ensure each user can only access their own monitors, results, and profile. No method of transmission or storage is fully secure, but we work hard to protect your information.

9. International transfers

Your data may be processed in the United States or other countries where our providers operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses to protect data transferred outside the EU/UK.

10. Children's privacy

UptimeBuddy is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version here and update the "Last updated" date. For material changes, we will notify you by email or in-app message before the change takes effect.

12. Contact us
